COOL SHIRTS BUYING GUIDES / Family
Getting a grandparent shirt’s name and style right
The most personal detail on a grandparent shirt may be one short word. Family nicknames vary, and a familiar title can matter more than a long message. Confirm the name first, then choose a design that suits the person wearing it.
Ask about the exact nickname
Nana, Nanna and Nan are not interchangeable to every family. The same applies to Papa, Pop and Grandpa. Write down the preferred spelling before planning a personalized design. If a title has only recently been chosen, ask quietly rather than turning a surprise gift into an unwanted family announcement.
Make the title easy to read
A decorative font may look attractive close up but lose clarity at normal viewing distance. Check the lettering on the shirt mockup and look for enough contrast with the fabric. If several grandchildren’s names are included, leave space around them instead of making every line smaller to fit.
Let their interests shape the gift
Gardening, fishing, reading or a favorite everyday pastime can give the shirt a life beyond a family photograph. Choose colors and a silhouette similar to clothes they already like. Measure a well-fitting shirt if you can, and compare its width and length with the specific garment chart.
