A cyclist’s guide to choosing a casual bike shirt

The bicycle itself is a good place to start. Road, mountain and gravel bikes have recognizable differences, and riders often care about them. Choose the right kind of riding before deciding whether the shirt should be humorous, technical-looking or minimal.

Look at the bike

Handlebars, tires and frame shapes can make an illustration feel relevant or slightly wrong. You do not need a drawing of the recipient’s exact bicycle, but a mountain-bike rider may not want a road-racing scene. If you are buying a gift, a recent ride photo can help identify the right direction.

Keep route references honest

A hill, a winding road or an original route line can suggest a favorite kind of ride. If a real destination or distance appears, check it. Avoid choosing a shirt that implies completion of an event the wearer has not entered, or affiliation with a cycling team they do not belong to.

Treat casual tees and riding kit separately

A cycling-themed T-shirt can work before or after a ride without replacing purpose-built kit. Check the listed fabric and fit for its intended use. If it will be a layering piece, compare measurements with a similar shirt and consider what the wearer plans to put underneath.
